Homework Time

Try Some of these ideas:

  • Set a Timer: Make it a game by setting a timer for homework sessions. Kids get to see how much they can get done before the buzzer sounds, and you get a quick break from nagging. Win-win!
  • Create a Homework Playlist: Let your kids pick some tunes (within reason) for their study time. Music can boost focus, and it gives them something to look forward to during those “fun” math problems.
  • Homework Snack Attack: Designate a special snack for homework time—think fruit slices or trail mix. Just keep the cookies and chips for after the homework is done.
  • Homework Buddy System: Pair up kids with siblings or friends for a study session. They can swap tips and tricks, making homework less of a chore and more of a social event.
  • Make it a Routine Ritual: Incorporate a fun pre-homework ritual like a quick dance break or a five-minute “chat about your day.” It helps ease into homework time and makes it feel less like a punishment.
  • Reward System: Create a reward chart where kids earn stars or points for completing their homework. After a certain number of stars, they can trade points for a small treat or extra screen time. As adults, we reward ourselves. Sometimes we reward our family with a vacation or a stay-cation. If you discourage rewards for finishing tasks, consider building a stronger work ethic and eliminating screens in the home altogether. Many families have No-TV homes. there is strong evidence that Screens are dulling our youth. Food for thought.
  • Homework Zone: Set up a dedicated homework station that’s stocked with all the supplies they might need. Bonus points if it has a fun name, like “The Homework HQ.”
